The best instagrams for outdoor lovers
It has been 170 weeks since I posted my first Instagram photo and I would never have guessed that it could get such a big thing. I think I was probably among the first of my friends to start using it and a lot has changed over the past years. First I was travelleranto like on many of my other personal social media channels (I bet you never noticed my Facebook username is travelleranto, too!), then I changed to we12travel.com about a year ago and just recently I finally changed to we12travel. At some point I even had two accounts, one for the blog and a personal one, but soon I decided that mixing travel/outdoor with a little bit of personal stuff every now and then would not hurt anybody. Even though I deleted most of my personal stuff from the past, you may still find some concert pics or chocolate porn if you scroll all the way down on my profile…
Whenever I’m bored, waiting for something, having breakfast or just any moment I’m not doing anything, I take the chance to check Instagram. Not just my own feed but I also check various of my favorite hashtags (#travelalaska #outdoorwomen #mystopover #skyporn … just to name a few) and what my friends are liking, to find more inspiration. I think that happens about 50 times a day (not kidding) but it’s so easy … and it’s better than picking your nose, right?
Yesterday I stumbled upon a Dutch blog by Janou about how to get more followers, likes and engagement on Instagram. She wrote it after reading an article about Cracking the Instagram code which is actually very interesting if you are looking to grow your audience. Even though I don’t follow a lot of people (I don’t want to take forever to scroll through my feed because I still also follow my sister, for example…) and I generally don’t follow the “Instagram rules” I still found it a really useful read, especially about the filters not to use (Kelvin – I mean, does anybody actually still use that at all???) …
In the past I already shared my Instagram (and social media) pet peeves, such as too many hashtags, follow for follow and poor quality pics, but I never shared my favorite Instagrammers. Visual content is the future for social media so today I thought it would be fun to share the best instagrams for outdoor lovers -> those that inspire me to get out and never stop exploring!
wild.way
wild.way mostly shares (wilderness) pictures that are shared by the hashtag #WildWay. Where many of the bigger travel accounts have a specific theme they post about, wild.way has a great variety of landscapes, people and anything else that has to do with travel.
tasmania
Only 5 more months until we’re taking off to Tasmania. Yes friends, TASMANIA! Ever since I booked our planetickets I’ve started following the tasmania account. Ofcourse I knew that they would share gorgeous pics but man … Tazzie looks so promising!
samanwarner
Samantha lives near the Canadian Rockies which happens to be one of my favorite places in the world. When I started trying out hashtags, she was one of the first ones I found using #mountains and I have been following her ever since. If you check her profile you’ll understand why: her pics are totally rad, and they make me ache for the mountains.
theoutbound
The Outbound Collective shows that it can be super simple to have fun in the outdoors. If you want to be featured by them, tag #theoutbound. If only those mountains would be my playground…
olboyphotos
Danny has only been on Instagram for about 9 months and I found him when searching for pictures of the Alaskan North Slope. His Aurora Borealis pictures are stunning and he does a great job in wildlife photography, too!
nellahelsinki
Nella is a totally cool lady from Finland whom I spent a couple of days with during last year’s #outdoorsfinland blogtrip. I always love hanging out with like-minded women who have a similar passion for the outdoors and we had some great chats about (surprise) the outdoors! Not only is Nella a great instagrammer but she also happens to be one of the top travel bloggers in Finland. I’m still hoping she will start writing in English one day, too…
sublimewilderness
For the most awesome landscape pictures, make sure to follow sublimewilderness. They repost pictures that are shared through #sublimewilderness, water and mountains definitely seem to be some of their favorite subjects.
danbaileyphoto
Dan is a professional outdoor/adventure photographer and one of the guides with Alaska Photo Treks – a company owned by my Alaskan friend Jody. Although Dan is based in Alaska he shoots all over the world and his pics are incredibly inspiring!
tfbergen
Tomasz is based in western Norway and makes stunning pictures of his kayaking trips through the Norwegian Fjords. Seeing his pictures makes me wonder why I didn’t bother to go kayaking in the fjords when I was there (but then again … there was no time left with all those hikes we did).
outdoorwomen
Last but not least – the account by the Outdoor Women’s Alliance! They share the most inpiring pictures from ladies in the outdoors and I feel honoured that they shared some of my pics, too. Want to be featured? Then use #outdoorwomen. I’m also a member of their outdoorwomen Pinterest board which you should definitely check out, too!
This is just a tiny selection of my favorite instagrammers but maybe I’ll share another bunch some other time, there’s enough inspiration out there for sure! If you aren’t following me yet, don’t worry, I won’t kill you, but it would be nice if you could … find me here!
Do you follow any of the above? Or can you recommend some others that I should follow?
