Hiking in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena in Austria

Are you going on vacation to the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena in Austria? Good choice! I went there on a summer vacation a few years ago and really loved the area for hiking. There are some pretty easy hikes that are good for everyone, but the seasoned hiker will also get their money’s worth here. In this article I’m sharing my five favorite hikes in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. Enjoy reading!

The Coburger Hütte

The most beautiful hike I made in the Zugspitz Arenas was one to the beautiful Coburger Hütte. The easiest way is to take the cable car from Ehrwald to the Ehrwalder Alm. From here you can choose the easy route where you walk on a relatively easy path to the hut or the difficult route that takes you over the high Tajatörl. I did the latter myself and was really beautiful, but not suitable for people with vertigo.

Around the Heiterwanger See

An easy walk is the one around the Heiterwanger See. This turquoise colored mountain lake near the village of Heiterwang is a popular place for easy strolls. The road around the lake is not difficult, but it offers fabulous views and it’s a good alternative for when the weather is not so good. You will also find more than enough cows on the road so in case you don’t like hiking between cows, here’s your moment to practise!

Across the Sonnenbergjöchle

A nice day hike is the one on to Sonnenbergjöchle. The hike starts in Lermoos Obergarten at the bus stop. Take the hike up to the Garneralm here. Along the way you have, when in good weather, beautiful views of the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. From here you ascend further to the Sonnenbergjöchle, from where you descend via a number of narrow paths via the Bichlbachhütte to Bichlbach. Transport is easy via the local hiking bus.

The prettiest mountain lakes in Austria

Just before the Fernpass and on the border of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena and Innsbruck you will find the small mountain lakes Weissensee, Blindsee and Mittersee. These bright blue lakes are right next to the highway, but are well worth a visit. The Blindsee is the most beautiful of all, from the panorama terrace of the restaurant you have a beautiful view of the turquoise colored lake and the Zugspitze in the background. Tip: do this walk early in the morning, the tourists who are passing through to Italy are not there yet!

Climbing the Almkopf

During my holiday in Austria I spent the night in Bichlbach and took a nice hike from here to the Almkopf. I first went up with the Almkopfbahn and from here took the hiking trail to the Almkopf, a not too difficult climb to 1,800 meters. You are just above the tree line so it is hardly alpine terrain. I took the walk on a relatively cloudy day, but I can imagine that it is really a beautiful view when the sun is shining and you have a view over the Heiterwanger Seee and the Zugzpitze.
